What does EPD stand for?
EPD, or Environmental Product Declaration, stands for reports that are standardized, verified documents that transparently present credible information about a product’s impact on the environment. Following the ISO14025 standard (i.e., Type III Environmental Declaration), EPDs are useful for communication, comparison, and decision-making. EPDs are based on the information from a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study. The EPD report includes a summary of LCA results, environmental impact data, and other relevant information.
Are EPDs mandatory?
It depends on your market and what you’re selling into – but requirements are tightening fast.
Current requirements:
- Public tenders – many government procurement processes now require verified EPDs, especially in Netherlands, UK, Germany and Nordic countries
- Green building certifications – BREEAM, LEED, DGNB and other schemes often require or reward EPDs
- Customer specifications – large developers, architects and construction firms increasingly demand EPDs from suppliers
- Netherlands – environmental data in NMD is mandatory for calculating building environmental performance (MPG)
Coming regulations:
- The revised Construction Products Regulation (CPR) will make environmental declarations mandatory for construction products in the EU.
- Starting mid-2026, manufacturers must integrate environmental information – beginning with Global Warming Potential from EN 15804+A2 – into their Declaration of Performance (DoP). By 2028, this information will be required in Digital Product Passports.

Yes, an EPD is verified externally. This involves an independent LCA expert reviewing both the LCA report (the underlying data) and the EPD itself. This review ensures everything complies with the relevant Program Operator Instructions (POs), Product Category Rules (PCR), and established verification protocols. In simpler terms, a trusted third party double-checks the information to guarantee its accuracy and adherence to EPD creation guidelines. What does the accuracy of an EPD tell you?
