Facing increasing regulatory and MKI requirements in Dutch infrastructure projects, Mourik Infra turned to Ecochain to understand the true footprint of their products.
By visualizing material and process impacts, the team gained clear insights into where reductions were possible, helping them lower MKI scores, meet tender criteria, and stand out with verifiable sustainability data.

I am Sebastiaan Joosten, and I work at Mourik Infra as a Sustainability Coordinator. In this role, I am responsible for the sustainability aspect within tenders. What does that mean in practice?
The government needs to become more sustainable, and they mainly achieve this through procurement, because that’s where most of their environmental impact lies. They essentially provide “discounts” in tenders.
For example, if you are reconstructing an N-road, you might receive a discount of, say, one million euros if you do it in a more sustainable way. My job is to secure that discount and to substantiate it. This is mainly done using ECI, and calculating that ECI is part of my work.
For this, I use Ecochain. Especially the reporting required to prove your impact can be done quite easily with Ecochain. The EPDs – Environmental Product Declarations – are generated quite easily, and you can also compare products, such as different asphalt mixtures. For instance, what happens if you increase the amount of recycled content? You can calculate all of that easily in Ecochain and then demonstrate it to your client.
Do you have a tip for companies like yours that are facing similar challenges?
Be creative, explore what’s possible, and keep improving.
