{"id":2338,"date":"2019-04-24T10:12:43","date_gmt":"2019-04-24T08:12:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blogs\/sustainable-development-goals-business\/"},"modified":"2025-03-26T12:00:23","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T12:00:23","slug":"sustainable-development-goals-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/nl\/blog\/sustainable-development-goals-business\/","title":{"rendered":"How the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Can Help Businesses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) are a blueprint for the prosperity of our planet and the people on it.<\/p>\n<p>The agenda addresses\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/?menu=1300\">17 urging Sustainable Development Goals<\/a>\u00a0(SDGs) related to inequality, climate, peace, justice, prosperity, and environmental degradation.<\/p>\n<p>Every part of society \u2013 state, industry, academia, and civil society \u2013 has to collaborate to achieve these goals \u2013 <em>businesses<\/em> included.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sustainable Development: 3 Pillar Model<\/h2>\n<p>Sustainability has become an all-purpose word. To make sense of different sustainability objectives, it helps to categorize them\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thwink.org\/sustain\/glossary\/ThreePillarsOfSustainability.htm\">in three pillars<\/a>; economic viability, environmental protection, and social equity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>These are the three pillars of sustainability:<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I. Economic Viability<\/h3>\n<p>A business is economically feasible (sustainable) when:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It can sustain its financing based on the perceived value by its stakeholders whether they are customers, shareholders, sponsors, etc;<\/li>\n<li>Sustain its access to material resources;<\/li>\n<li>Sustain its license to operate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Only if all of the above requirements are met, a company can future proof its business. This implies that a business has to add value, not only to its stakeholders but also to the environment and society. It has to avoid wasteful consumption of material resources, and comply with social and environmental regulations.<\/p>\n<p>The more businesses adopt these basic requirements, the more it impacts the aggregate economy.<\/p>\n<p>This pillar counters the failures of a linear economy and supports the transition towards a future proof, <a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/circular-economy-guide\/\">circular economy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">II. Environmental Protection<\/h3>\n<p>We have taken our natural resources for granted. We ignored both their scarcity and role in the workings of the ecosystems that provide us with the most valuable resources that make life possible; <a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/impact-categories-lca\/\">clean air, clean water, and rich soil<\/a>. Protecting the planet from further exploitation and neglect especially applies to corporations. Industries are key agents in shifting from the exploitation of natural resources towards restoring the ecosystems that are the foundation of future prosperity.<\/p>\n<p>This pillar sets goals to help restore our natural capital, think; reducing fossil fuel emissions and deforestation, evolving sustainable agriculture and promoting <a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/circular-economy-guide\/\">circularity<\/a> within industry value chains.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">III. Social Equity<\/h3>\n<p>We have an ethical responsibility to fight injustice and poverty and ensure inclusiveness, yet we also benefit from developing Social Equity. Talent, skills, and ambition are not distributed exclusively amongst the most privileged. Companies will benefit when everyone gets an equal opportunity to develop their skills. It ensures a skilled, healthy and vital workforce.<\/p>\n<p>This pillar supports initiatives to promote peace, inclusiveness, social justice, and economic autonomy, within business networks and grassroots movements.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sdg-tracker.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SDG tracker<\/a>\u00a0gives a detailed overview of to what extent each goal has been achieved so far. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unstats.un.org\/sdgs\/indicators\/Global%20Indicator%20Framework%20after%20refinement_Eng.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">detailed overview of the global indicator framework<\/a>\u00a0can be found here.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can businesses meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)?<\/h2>\n<p>Paradoxically, the 230 indicators that monitor the 17 goals and 169 targets of the SDGs, were developed for Governments and NGO\u2019s,\u00a0<em>\u2013 not for business<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The indicators that support the climate goal, for instance, have no business relevance but focus mostly on policies and subsidies.<a href=\"http:\/\/report.businesscommission.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0The Business and Sustainable Development Commission<\/a>\u00a0points out that we urgently need a re-interpretation of the indicators to link them to business and business intelligence and smarter, sustainable decision-making.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SDGs: A $12 trillion business opportunity<\/h3>\n<p>The good news is that business does not need to wait for a top-down goal-setting process.<\/p>\n<p>According to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/report.businesscommission.org\/report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Better Business Better World report<\/a>\u00a0by the Business &amp; Sustainable Development Commission, achieving the Global Goals could open up an estimated US$12 trillion in market opportunities in four economic systems that represent around 60 per cent of the real economy: food and agriculture, cities, energy and materials, and health and well-being.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dnvgl.com\/feature\/gor2018.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leading executives and experts<\/a>\u00a0have recognized these business opportunities and are pathing the way already.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Environmental Intelligence to help set and measure goals<\/h3>\n<p>In the meanwhile, the\u00a0business intelligence tools\u00a0are evolving to help organizations set measurable goals and monitor progress. All-in-one solutions, however, don\u2019t exist. This is mainly because SDG targets are either quantitative or qualitative and need to be measured accordingly.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recognizing the difference between qualitative and quantitative goals.<\/h3>\n<p>Looking at the nature of the three pillars, the development of the first two is supported by economic and environmental SDGs of which the progress can be monitored through quantitative parameters. Yet the development of Social Equity implies the use of mostly qualitative parameters.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/life-cycle-assessment-lca-guide\/\">Measuring your impact \u2013 a good start to meet SDGs<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>The first step to reach a goal is always to assess the status quo.
