The methodology of an LCA is defined in ISO 14040. But the family of standards defined in ISO 14000 ff sets standards for many more aspects of the environmental impact of a company. ISO 14001, for example, defines how an Environmental Management System should be set up.<\/p>\n

These standards define how <\/strong>environmental management systems<\/strong><\/em> are supposed to work, and they serve 3 goals:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Minimize the impact that company operations have on the environment<\/li>\n
  2. Standardize compliance for laws, regulations and public requirements<\/li>\n
  3. Continuously improve these aspects<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In a nutshell, ISO 14001 & Co. define how<\/em> environmental audits and reporting is supposed to be undertaken.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    In this article, we will provide you with an overview of the different ISO norms that are part of that family and summarize what the implications for your business are.<\/p>\n

    ISO 14020-14025<\/td>\nEnvironmental labeling<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

    However, in this article, we will dive into the norms that we and our customers work with on a regular basis.<\/p>\n

    These norms are:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    ISO 14001<\/strong><\/h4>\n

    This norm defines how an Environmental Management System needs to be set up<\/p>\n

    ISO 14020-14025<\/strong><\/h4>\n

    Define how environmental information gets published \u2013 through labeling, reporting or Environmental Product Declarations<\/p>\n

    ISO 14040 \/ 14044<\/strong><\/h4>\n

    Defines how Life Cycle Assessments are conducted<\/p>\n

    Let\u2019s start.<\/p>\n

    ISO 14001: Environmental Management System Standards<\/h2>\n

    ISO 14001 defines a framework for setting
    \nup an Environmental Management System.<\/p>\n

    Above all, this makes it the foundation of creating a standardized system to measure and improve the environmental impact of a company. Eventually, this increases efficiency and reduces costs.<\/p>\n

    ISO 14001 is, by itself, a voluntary<\/em> norm. However, certain regulations might require a company to use a system that complies with it.<\/p>\n

    The ISO 14001 Checklist<\/h3>\n

    According to ISO 14001, the documentation of the Environmental Management System (EMS) has to include:<\/p>\n

    1. Environmental Policy, objectives and targets
    \n2. Description of the scope of the EMS
    \n3. Description of the main elements of the EMS, how they interact, and where they are documented
    \n4. Records required by the standard
    \n5. Records required by the organization to ensure the effective planning, operation and control of processes with significant environmental effects<\/p>\n

    ISO 14001 Register<\/h3>\n

    To get an idea how organizations work with
    \nISO 14001, you can take a look at the certified companies in the ISO 14001 register<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    These are companies in different industries
    \nthat comply with the standard.<\/p>\n

    ISO 14020-14025: Environmental Labels & Declarations<\/h2>\n
    \"ISO<\/figure>\n

    The series of standards around ISO 14020 \u2013 ISO 14021 until 14025 \u2013 aims to standardize environmental labels and declarations.<\/p>\n

    Similarly, these standards prevent\u00a0greenwashing<\/em>,
    \nas all the companies that comply can actually verify their environmental
    \nclaims.<\/p>\n

    There are three types of Eco-labels\/declarations:<\/h3>\n

    ISO 14020 itself lines out the general principles. After that, the other standards dive into more depth.<\/p>\n

    ISO 14021 \/ 14022 \/ 14023: Self-declared labels (Type II)<\/h3>\n

    ISO 14021<\/a>\u00a0defines standards for self-declared environmental claims regarding
    \nproducts and services. However, these claims are made voluntarily. As such no
    \nthird-party verification is required. This is known as a type II environmental declaration
    \nor label.<\/p>\n

    It sets out the requirements for these voluntary
    \nclaims. It is\u00a0not<\/strong>\u00a0to be mistaken with defining legally
    \nrequired environmental information.<\/p>\n

    While 14021 defined terms and definitions, 14022 defines
    \nthe symbols that can be used.<\/p>\n

    The goal of ISO 14021 is to create environmental
    \nclaims and\/or eco-labels that are accurate, not misleading, that can be checked
    \nand will not be misinterpreted.<\/p>\n

    ISO 14022 defines the terms and symbols that should be
    \nused in environmental claims. This does, for example, include the\u00a0    Mobius Loop Markings<\/em><\/a>, the commonly used recycling symbol.
    \nVague<\/em>\u00a0statements, such as\u00a0environmentally friendly, <\/em>should\u00a0not<\/strong>\u00a0be
    \nused \u2013 because they cannot be checked.<\/p>\n

    ISO 14023 defines how these environmental claims get
    \ntested and evaluated.<\/p>\n

    ISO 14024: Principles & Procedures for Environmental Labeling (Type I)<\/h3>\n

    ISO 14024 provides guiding principles and procedures
    \nfor environmental labelling programs, known as type I environmental labels.
    \nThese include product categories, environmental criteria and product function
    \ncharacteristics.<\/p>\n

    This is important to make the data comparable and
    \nensures that certification procedures for compliance assessment of
    \nenvironmental labels can be set-up.<\/p>\n

    ISO 14025: Environmental Product Declarations (Type III)<\/h3>\n

    ISO 14025 ensures that the environmental information one business shares with another one is standardized through Environmental Product Declarations (EPD).<\/p>\n

    An EPD is verified through an independent party and follows the standardized principles of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)<\/a> \u2013 defined in ISO 14040.<\/p>\n

    ISO 14040 \/ 14044: Standardizing Life Cycle Assessments<\/h2>\n

    ISO 14040 defines the principles and frameworks to conduct a correct Life Cycle Assessment<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    It shows how the Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) is and the Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) are conducted. It does, however, not specify the methodology for the individual faces.<\/p>\n

    That\u2019s what ISO 14044<\/a> exists for: ISO 14044 specifies the requirements and guidelines for a correctly conducted Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)<\/a>.
