Only recently have businesses started building their strategies upon sustainability as a long-term driver for value.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackrock.com\/corporate\/global-directory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BlackRock<\/a> manages more than 9 <em>trillion<\/em> US dollars in assets, which makes them the world\u2019s biggest asset manager. And their latest research on the <a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)<\/a> shows: <em>Making SDG impact is closely tied to financial impact<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s break down BlackRock\u2019s findings.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Financial Materiality: Sustainability meets financial condition<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sasb.org\/about\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SASB<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a global nonprofit organization that guides the disclosure of sustainability information from companies to their investors. As such, their very reason of existence is to make the financial impact of sustainable decisions transparent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They use their own framework, which is divided into <strong>5 sustainability dimensions<\/strong> (environment, social capital, human capital, business model &amp; innovation, leadership &amp; governance).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These 5 sustainability dimensions are further defined by 26 sustainability issues (see graphic).<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14689\" src=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Screenshot-2021-07-16-at-14.38.36-1024x665-1.png\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" srcset=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"665\" \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far, this looks like just another way to look at SDGs. That\u2019s where the SASB Materiality Map closes the loop.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>980 indicators for financial impact<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sasb.org\/standards\/materiality-map\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SASB Materiality Map<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a publicly available tool that connect sustainability to financial impacts, in what SASB calls \u201cfinancially material issues\u201d \u2013 issues that are \u201creasonably likely to impact the financial condition or operating performance of a company, and therefore most important to investors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a pretty interesting deep-dive into different industries. BlackRock <strong>took that data<\/strong> and <strong>mapped it to the SDGs<\/strong>\u2013 thereby identifying which SDGs cover financially material issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And what did they find?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Finding the overlap: How the SDG indicators overlap with financial materiality indicators<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>BlackRock\u2019s analysis showed that more than <strong>70% of Materiality indicators were to be found in the SDG indicators<\/strong>, with especially high overlap in the environment, business model, and human capital categories.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipe.com\/news\/blackrock-sdgs-not-just-for-impact-oriented-allocations\/10053807.article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">More than 50% of indicators were to be found in the goals for clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), decent work and economic growth (SDG 8), affordable and clean energy (SDG 7), and responsible consumption and production (SDG12)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Especially <strong>mining materials <\/strong>and<strong> infrastructure<\/strong> massively financially benefit from adopting the SDGs. <strong>Food &amp; Beverage<\/strong> and<strong> transportation <\/strong>are also highly mapped to material impact.<\/p>\n<p>The paper makes it clear that: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the cost of not achieving the UN SDGs is greater than the cost of action. <\/span>Big market opportunities await \u2013 that should be clear for even the most conservative investor.<\/p>\n<p><em>The original research document is unfortunately not available to the public.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Making money and saving the planet always seemed like polar opposites.
