And greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) are THE term that is linked to the climate crisis.<\/p>\n<p>But, our ecosystems are made up of many different factors that all support each other as a <em>cohesive whole<\/em>. And- the same goes for the impact your company has on the environment. By focusing on carbon footprints, are we forgetting the rest of the \u2018environment\u2019 in environmental footprint?<\/p>\n<p>What are the <strong>risks <\/strong>of a tunnel vision on carbon footprints in your sustainability strategy?<\/p>\n<p>This article:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The difference between carbon vs environmental footprints<\/li>\n<li>The risks of carbon tunnel visions &amp; how to escape them<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Carbon vs. Environmental Footprints<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s first look at the difference between the two. Because they are often used interchangeably.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u2018Carbon footprint\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A carbon footprint can be calculated by performing a <a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/life-cycle-assessment-lca-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Life Cycle Assessment<\/a>. It includes all greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) expressed in kg <span data-contrast=\"auto\">CO\u2082<\/span> equivalents (kg <span data-contrast=\"auto\">CO\u2082<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">-eq<\/span>). These equivalents make it possible to come to a single metric for global warming potential, expressed in tons of <span data-contrast=\"auto\">CO\u2082<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Even if the global warming effect is not caused by <span data-contrast=\"auto\">CO\u2082<\/span> but by another GHG, such as methane or laughing gas. This footprint is also often referred to with the term \u2018climate\u2019, as it includes all relevant greenhouse gas emissions that form a danger to our climate issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u2018Environmental footprint\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, an \u2018environmental\u2019 footprint is the <\/span><b>total package.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It consists of a wide spectrum of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/impact-categories-lca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">environmental impact category<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> outcomes calculated by a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), that <\/span><b>includes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> climate emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of these other impact categories, next to climate emissions are;<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Eutrophication:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This impact category covers the impacts on terrestrial and aquatic environments due to the emission of nitrogen-containing compounds. Think of over-fertilization or nitrogen-extensive construction processes. This is a serious issue incorporated in many legislations and even puts some construction projects on hold in The Netherlands.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b> Acidification:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This category indicates the potential acidification of soils and water as a result of the release of certain gases, such as nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides. One of the more \u2018famous\u2019 results here is acid rain. As you can imagine, acidification can heavily impact ecosystems and may even cause damage to buildings.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Toxicities:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Toxicities include both impact on human health as well as ecosystems (freshwater organisms) due to toxic substances that are emitted to the environment. The resulting impact on human health could, for example, be cancer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Ozone depletion:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This category indicates the emissions to air that cause destruction (a gradual thinning) of the Earth\u2019s ozone layer. It\u2019s also called ozone layer depletion- and causes increased UV radiation levels on our Earth\u2019s surface. This is of course damaging to human health- think of increases in types of skin cancers. But UV radiation also affects agricultural productivity (reduces plant growth).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although these two footprint types (carbon\/climate &amp; environmental) are calculated through the same means (LCA). An environmental footprint is the <\/span><b>only one<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that discusses <\/span><b>all types<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of environmental impacts a company can have on our environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14924\" src=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Environmental-footprints-vs.-carbon-footprints.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 698px) 100vw, 698px\" srcset=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"698\" height=\"588\" \/><figcaption><strong>Image 1. <\/strong>Comparing carbon footprints with environmental footprints.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>A Carbon Footprint isn\u2019t always the biggest impact chunk<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a reason carbon and its notorious brothers and sisters from the greenhouse gas family are so important. They contribute <\/span><b>significantly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to global warming, which results in many different changes in our climate. And this often comes back in a company or product\u2019s environmental scores.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it\u2019s not always the case that <\/span><b>only<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> carbon makes up the biggest impact chunk in your footprint. A good example is the Environmental Profit &amp; Loss Account (EP&amp;L) from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kering.com\/en\/sustainability\/measuring-our-impact\/our-ep-l\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kering Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is the mother company of Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, and many other luxury brands. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In image 1, you see that:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">next to GHG emissions (climate) with <\/span><b>35%<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">land use actually contributes significantly to Kering\u2019s environmental impact with <\/span><b>31%.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and so does water pollution with <\/span><b>10% <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the total environmental footprint.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive greenhouse gas emissions aren\u2019t our only problem. In doing so, you potentially <\/span><b>exclude<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> other relevant impact outcomes of your products that heavily impact the environment as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of that, y<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our reduction efforts can <\/span><b>increase<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0impact in other impact categories. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe switching from fossil to biobased resources seems like a good way to reduce emissions in your product\u2019s production. However, this can result in extra land use\/use of fertilizers\/pesticides- which then <\/span><b>negatively affects biodiversity and disrupts local ecosystems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Life Cycle Assessments offer the whole package<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lways look at your environmental footprint <em>as a whole<\/em>. And model your impact reduction efforts accordingly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Make Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) of your products and assess their full environmental impact. This ensures<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you don\u2019t leave out on anything \u2013 and your actions aren\u2019t damaging the environment in another way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Start with LCA yourself!
