But that doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s always<strong> clear <\/strong>how it actually works.<\/p>\n<p>This article will guide you in selecting high-quality carbon offsetting projects that fit your business:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Which offset projects can you choose from?<\/li>\n<li>What criteria should you consider?<\/li>\n<li>How can you ensure your offset choices don\u2019t affect your reputation?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let\u2019s dive into it.<\/p>\n<h3><b>First \u2013 what\u2019s a carbon offset again?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/technology\/carbon-offset\/additional-info&amp;sa=D&amp;source=docs&amp;ust=1651580840290974&amp;usg=AOvVaw2nsu_1Q7kFS3zeLTO2hdCF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IPCC<\/a> defines a carbon offset as \u201cany activity that compensates for the emission of carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) or other greenhouse gases (measured in carbon dioxide equivalents, CO<sub>2<\/sub><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-eq) by providing for an emission reduction elsewhere\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organizations can compensate for the CO<sub>2<\/sub><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emissions they haven\u2019t managed to reduce <strong>yet<\/strong>. By purchasing carbon credits that contribute to a certified emission reduction project (carbon offsetting project). Here: <\/span><strong>1 carbon credit corresponds to 1 tonne of CO<sub>2 <\/sub>-eq.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to note that the offsetting process is <strong>complementary<\/strong> to the impact reduction strategy of your company. It should <\/span><strong>never replace it<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Always actively reduce your emissions first.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>1. Which offset projects can you choose from?<\/h2>\n<p>In the voluntary carbon market, there are two types of offset projects you can choose from that are divided into categories.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Avoidance projects<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>These p<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rojects <strong>prevent<\/strong> carbon emissions that would have been released into the atmosphere. It\u2019s divided into 4 categories:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>1. Renewable Energy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: renewable power infrastructures that contribute to the decarbonization of the local energy grid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. <\/strong><b>Energy Efficiency and Fuel Switching<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: energy-saving measures that reduce carbon emissions and replace fossil fuels with sustainable energy sources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3. Household Devices<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: efficient cookstoves that significantly reduce wood consumption. Or individual biogas digesters that provide sustainable fuel to local communities, prevent deforestation, and avoid GHG emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>4. <\/strong><b>Water Management<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: projects that supply clean water to households in rural communities, remove the need to boil water, and reduce GHG emissions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Removal projects<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These projects <strong>reduce<\/strong> carbon emissions by absorbing them from the atmosphere (depending on the methodology used, these projects can either be removal, avoidance- or both.). It\u2019s divided into 3 categories:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>1.<\/strong> <\/span><b>Agriculture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: agricultural practices that store carbon in soils while restoring biodiversity and developing new sources of income for smallholders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>2.<\/strong> <\/span><b>Forestry and Land Use<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: projects that protect and restore existing forest areas threatened by deforestation. (Depending on the methodology used, these projects can either be removal, avoidance- or both).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. <\/strong><b>Waste Management<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: landfill projects designed to capture the methane released by waste disposal, which can turn it into clean fuel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17938\" src=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Climatseed-x-Ecochain_Different-Offset-project-types.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" srcset=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1161\" \/><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>2. What criteria should you consider for selecting high-standard offset projects?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><b>1. Projects <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">must<\/span> be certified<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An offset project must be certified by an international or national standard to issue carbon credits. The standard differs depending on the project typology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s the list of the most common international &amp; national standards:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldstandard.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gold Standard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/verra.org\/project\/vcs-program\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VCS Verra<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.planvivo.org\/our-team\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plan Vivo<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.climateactionreserve.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climate Action Reserve<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/americancarbonregistry.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Credit Registry\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, third-party auditors verify the number of emissions absorbed or avoided during a specific period by the project compared to a baseline (base scenario), following methodologies established by the standards. After that, the standards can issue the carbon credits. All credits generated by a certified project are accounted for on the standard\u2019s registry (each standard has its registry).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Registries are <\/span><b>crucial<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to avoid the risk of double-counting. <\/span><b>Double counting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> happens when two or more organizations monetize and claim the same credit. Once an organization decides to purchase carbon credits, intermediaries such as <a href=\"https:\/\/climateseed.com\/\">ClimateSeed<\/a> settle the contribution on behalf of their clients. They transfer the credits and cancel them once the credits are retired.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the certification and the credit issuance, periodical monitoring and reporting activities are performed to ensure the continuity of the projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2. Emissions removal is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">proven<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All emission removals \u2013 and the project activities that generate them \u2013 should be proven to have genuinely taken place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>3. <\/b><b>Emission removal is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">m<\/span><\/b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>easurable<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All emission removals should be quantifiable, using recognized measurement tools (including adjustments for uncertainty and leakage), against a credible emissions baseline.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>4. The offset project is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">additional<\/span> (adds value)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project needs to be issuing carbon credits in a threatened area so that the added value is <\/span><b>real<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Financial additionality, which means that the project could not exist without the issuance of carbon credits- is also needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>5. Emission <\/b><b>removal is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">i<\/span><\/b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>ndependently verified\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All emission removals should be verified to a reasonable level of assurance by an independent and qualified third party.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>6. Every carbon credit is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">unique<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No more than one carbon credit can be associated with the single emission reduction or removal of one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO<sub>2 <\/sub>-eq). Carbon credits have to be stored and retired in an independent public registry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>7. Carbon credits are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">permanent<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carbon credits represent <\/span><b>permanent<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emission removals. This means emission reductions represented by the carbon credits can\u2019t be reversed after the credits are issued. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, trees are planted as means of capturing carbon. However, a forest fire or logging happens in the next hundred years. In this case, permanence isn\u2019t met as the captured carbon is released back into the atmosphere.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>8. Offset projects should have <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">co-benefits<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Co-benefits are all the positive externalities enabled by your chosen offset project. They can truly increase the quality and positive impact of the offset project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carbon reduction projects <\/span><b>preserve the planet, help local communities, and protect biodiversity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Additionally, they support the achievement of the <\/span><b>UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which also lead to co-benefits for everyone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, make sure the project matches your organization\u2019s environmental and social goals.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17922\" src=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/iu-2.9992346.jpeg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 619px) 100vw, 619px\" srcset=\"\" alt=\"The 17 UN SDGs. \" width=\"619\" height=\"495\" \/><\/figure>\n<h3><b>9. Carbon credits should be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">transparent<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure the price margins of your purchased carbon credits are clear and the money goes to local communities. It is important to purchase the credits from a <\/span><b>transparent player<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s a common practice in the market to buy carbon credits through resellers, of which most do not show <\/span><b>transparent margins<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The result: you don\u2019t know how much of your contribution is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actually<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> going to the project and local communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>3. How can you ensure your offset choices don\u2019t affect your reputation?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Transparent reporting <\/strong>and<strong> communication<\/strong> related to a company\u2019s environmental strategy and carbon offsetting are essential to <strong>avoid greenwashing.\u00a0<\/strong>Some tips on communicating your offsetting efforts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Focus your communication on your environmental impact reduction process as a whole. Offsetting should be considered as a <strong>complementary action<\/strong> to strong reduction efforts. This means a company should report its annual carbon footprint (scope 1 &amp; 2, and 3) and detail its carbon reduction efforts \u2013 before even talking about carbon offsetting.<\/li>\n<li>Use the term carbon neutrality correctly, and when possible \u2013<strong> avoid using it. <\/strong>According to the IPCC definition<strong>, \u201ccarbon neutrality\u201d<\/strong> is a generic term that is scientifically valid on a global level. It indicates a worldwide equilibrium (equal state) between anthropogenic emissions and anthropogenic absorption. An organization, product, or service cannot be carbon neutral by itself but can <strong>contribute <\/strong>to achieving global carbon neutrality.<\/li>\n<li>Be wary when communicating about <strong>SDGs<\/strong>. Ensure that you provide <strong>detailed information (KPIs)<\/strong> about how you are targeting them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Measure, Reduce, Offset, and Report<\/h3>\n<p>Measure, Reduce, Offset, and Report. These are the 4 steps for an effective strategy to reach net-zero emissions and the 1.5\u00b0C goal established by the Paris Agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Extreme weather events such as droughts and floods will increase.
