And like in school, there are those <\/span><b>straight-A students<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that blurt out the answers while you still try\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to understand the question. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What answers do MUD jeans, Patagonia, and MATE the label frontrunners have regarding sustainable apparel?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fancy a peek at their homework?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, we study the <\/span><b>concrete actions <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that make these companies frontrunners. And how you can adopt their underlying values of <em>innovation, communication, and accountability<\/em>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>#1 Mud Jeans: Innovative To The Core<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We find <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mudjeans.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MUD jeans<\/a><\/span> in the lab, the one with the glasses and the calculator. Or ditched those chemicals completely: they make their jeans look cool with lasers and ozone. Not only better for the environment but also the worker\u2019s health!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their jeans fabrics are made from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/global-standard.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Global Organic Textile Standard<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cotton and recycled cotton. Cotton that they themselves <\/span><b>recycled out of old denim.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This avoids environmental impacts! They get the old denim by taking back their old jeans. Sustainability needs not only aware brands but <\/span><b>aware customers.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In this, Patagonia helps its customers with a <\/span><b>never-expiring-free repair guarantee and DIY repair tutorials<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite (or maybe because of) calling everyone out, they became immensely popular! And all this \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/inshorts.com\/en\/news\/i-was-listed-as-a-billionaire-it-pissed-me-off-founder-who-donated-usbased-firm-1663302903542\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">unwanted<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d attention generates <\/span><b>profits. Those are brought to a good cause<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1% of each sale is given to environmental nonprofits and -grassroots organizations.\u00a0 Patagonia considers this \u201cpaying rent for our use of the planet\u201d. This initiative is called \u201c1% for the planet\u201d and was founded by the legendary Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard himself. Any business can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onepercentfortheplanet.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">join them<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patagonia made international headlines in September 2022: Chouinard and his family transferred ownership of the company. By creating a new type of ownership structure, they still hold decision power, but <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patagonia.com\/ownership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">earth is now [their] only shareholder<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u201d<\/span>.\u00a0 All net profits, after reinvestment in the business, will be used to fight the climate- and environmental crisis! That\u2019s what we call putting your money where your mouth is.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They seem more like a mission with a clothing company than the other way around. But after all, they still design products (even if they last a lifetime). We all emit it: CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They<\/span><b> recycle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> them, along with the fabric scraps from the cutting table, into new yarn, to be given a second life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding neat homework: their <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/matethelabel.com\/pages\/2021-impact-report#custom-page__Products\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impact report<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><b>extremely transparent<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about their CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emissions. You will find the numbers both for their product types and fabrics. They openly tell you (Patagonia nods approvingly in the background) that their emissions grow because they are growing. They also tell you exactly where they can trace their supply chain, and it\u2019s impressive!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, just like Patagonia, they give back 1% of their sales to environmental non-profits. Customers can choose one of four inspiring initiatives to do good through their purchase. With these initiatives and the offsetting projects, they <\/span><b>support many ecological and social<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> causes. A small but smashing company!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Main learning: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clear and transparent communication on your sustainability efforts is crucial to create understanding among all your stakeholders. Always ask yourself the question: if I were our consumers \u2013 would I understand your communication efforts?
