The term \u201cCradle-to-grave\u201d describes the \u201clife journey\u201d of most products in our linear economy. A product is produced, transported, used, and becomes waste at the end of its life. So: a cradle-to-grave LCA assesses the environmental footprint of your product\u2019s full life cycle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In LCA, the Cradle-to-grave journey consists of five \u201clife cycle stages\u201d. It\u2019s also called choosing the \u2018Scope\u2019 of an LCA \u2013 or \u2018setting the system boundaries\u2019 of an LCA.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you choose a life cycle model for your LCA, this means:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You collect data for the stages in the model: inputs of energy &amp; materials. Outputs of emissions into the environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The LCA assesses the environmental impacts occurring in each stage of the life cycle in your model. The alternatives are:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cradle-to-gate: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">assesses a product until it leaves the factory gates \u2013 before it is transported to the consumer (Stages 1 &amp; 2).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Cradle-to-grave<\/strong>: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">includes all 5 life cycle stages in your measurements. This gives you the complete environmental footprint, from start to end. (Stages 1-5)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/cradle-to-cradle-in-lca\/\"><b>Cradle-to-cradle<\/b><\/a><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a variation of Cradle-to-grave, but exchanges the waste stage with a recycling\/upcycling process that makes materials or components reusable for another product \u2013 essentially \u201cclosing the loop\u201d. Cradle-to-grave (and cradle-to-cradle) is the lifecycle model that shows you the complete environmental footprint of a product.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a product\u2019s complete footprint results:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shows you where <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> your product\u2019s environmental impacts come from. <\/span><b>So you can take the most effective measures to reduce them.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliminates the risk that your \u201cimprovements\u201d shift burdens from the phases you assessed \u2013 to those you don\u2019t look at. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E.g. you might choose a different material in your production that releases toxic emissions when incinerated. Without measuring, you won\u2019t know.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difference: Cradle-to-grave vs Cradle-to-cradle<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both cradle-to-grave and cradle-to-cradle look at the whole lifecycle of a product. But when you waste your product at the end of its life, your LCA model is cradle to grave. And if you recycle\/upcycle your product at the end of its life, your LCA model is cradle to cradle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to collect data for Cradle-to-Grave LCAs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find all the data you need to collect for LCA in our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/input-data-for-lca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guide here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Collect the data related to the raw materials and production phase of your product (cradle-to-gate model): your energy carriers, utilities, process emissions, production waste, transport, and raw materials (Bill of Materials \u2013 BoM).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Collect data on the<\/span><b> use phase<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of your product. This includes the transport to stores, and the average use &amp; maintenance of your product by consumers (e.g. electricity use, maintenance, cleaning, etc.).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Collect data on the <\/span><b>end-of-life phase (the \u2018Grave\u2019)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by answering the following question:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4><b>What waste treatment do you use for your product?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This often depends on the waste-disposal systems of the countries your product is sold\/wasted in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find average rates of waste treatment options (mainly: incineration, landfill, composting, or recycling) in national statistics.
