We switch up our normal clothing every day \u2013 and buy according to new trends. But that doesn\u2019t count for outerwear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People often own 3-4 coats and jackets, maybe 2 pairs of great sports pants, a pair of walking shoes \u2013 and these simply have to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do the job<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Outerwear needs to be <\/span><b>durable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>comfortable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Protecting <\/span><b>people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the elements (we love a solid raincoat or windstopper here in The Netherlands).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how can outerwear brands help <\/span><b>protect<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the elements\u2026from us?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We did the research for you. Let\u2019s dive in.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trend #1. Responsible materials<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All the brands we analyzed \u2013 focus on using responsible materials and suppliers for their products. \u2018Responsible\u2019 stands for socially and environmentally sustainable materials. Which choices stand out?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethical sourcing\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working conditions and social issues are a big problem in apparel. All brands commit to <\/span><b>social responsibility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in their supply chain \u2013 and transparently show how. Both Jack Wolfskin and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/csr-report.vaude.com\/gri-en\/social\/fair-wages.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaude<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> commit to safety &amp; fair living wages for all their workers, with their production sites frequently audited by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairwear.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fair Wear<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But there\u2019s care about ethics for the animal kingdom too. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.napapijri.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Napaprij<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> completely removed all fur and down from its products in 2016 ( animal products often have a large environmental impact too). And for the brands that haven\u2019t \u2013 at least all have strict animal welfare policies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another way to ensure ethical sourcing \u2013 is knowing <\/span><b>everything<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that goes on in your supply chain (preferably this includes environmental data and social efforts). And using the information to improve material sourcing and collaboration with suppliers. Napaprij created <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vfc.com\/responsibility\/product\/traceability-maps#row-93437\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">traceability maps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on their products\u2019 supply chains for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exactly that purpose<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We see two main trends in materials:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>PFC and PVC free.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PFCs are used for textile coating \u2013 mainly to make coats &amp; jackets water and dirt-repellent. PVC is an incredibly durable plastic \u2013 which also means it stays in nature forever. Both materials are nearly indestructible and a big danger to our planet and human health. Three brands (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jack-wolfskin.com\/information-pfc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jack Wolfskin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eu.patagonia.com\/nl\/en\/our-footprint\/pfc-free.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patagonia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &amp; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/csr-report.vaude.com\/gri-en\/product\/water-repellent-materials.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaude<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) on our list already completely removed PFCs. And two (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jack-wolfskin.co.uk\/sustainable-products\/?wgu=272355_16644_16765564977708_9cf6f0f1b5&amp;wgexpiry=1708092497&amp;utm_source=webgains&amp;utm_medium=paid&amp;utm_campaign=AFM_WebgainsUK_AlwaysOn&amp;utm_term=sale&amp;utm_content=performance&amp;utm_partner=sunnysales&amp;a_cid=affiliate.sunny.uk.webgains&amp;dt_subid2=272355_16644_16765564977708_9cf6f0f1b5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jack Wolfskin <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&amp; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaude.com\/en-NL\/Kids\/Favourite-New\/Sustainable-Materials\/PVC-free\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaude<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) almost completely removed PVC in their products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Recycle and reuse.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This covers the use of recycled and reused fabrics or materials in production processes. Which almost always results in a lower product footprint due to the prevention of producing new raw materials. Many of the brands have circular product series in which either they solely use recycled or reused materials \u2013 such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cotopaxi.com\/pages\/sustainable-by-design#:~:text=RESPONSIBLE-,Repurposed,-Everything%20in%20our\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cotopaxi\u2019s (Re)Purpose\u00ae Collection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And\/or create product lines that are easy to recycle. For example, Napaprijri\u2019s circular series claims to use only one material type \u2013 which makes it optimal for recycling processes (easier to take apart).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>*Beware:<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> natural or sustainable materials often seem the sustainable option. But, alternatives sometimes require even more environment-intensive processes for production. Already having a 10.4% turnover in 2021 on ecodesigned products. And aiming for 100% product development with an eco-design approach by 2026.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trend #2. Long and happy product lives<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Producing products that stand the test of time \u2013 is great for both your environmental footprint as well as that of the apparel industry. It\u2019s choosing quality over quantity. Making sure we prevent the production of new products. How do our brands embrace a long product life?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repairs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost all brands on our list include free repairs in their customer service. Repairs are a great way to improve your environmental footprint: your customers don\u2019t waste an (almost) good coat and unnecessarily buy something new. Some brands that deserve an extra shout-out are Patagonia, Decathlon, and Vaude. For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/help.vaude.com\/care-repair\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaude<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eu.patagonia.com\/nl\/en\/repairs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patagonia <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">offer great repair and DIY videos for small repairs \u2013 and a repair service for bigger repairs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">End-of-life product returns (circular program)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At least four brands, Patagonia, North Face, Cotopaxi, and Tentree \u2013 offer returns once consumers are done with their outerwear. They take <\/span><b>responsibility for the whole product lifecycle <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 including the end of life. Doing so prevents outerwear products from ending up in landfills. And makes recycling and reuse possible. Tentree\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tentree.com\/pages\/circularity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">circularity program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, enables customers to return their worn clothes for free. All clothing is either resold or recycled depending on the state. As a cherry on top \u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.decathlon.co.uk\/browse\/c0-shop-in-shop\/c1-second-life-products\/_\/N-1huyfi0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decathlon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> even offers second-hand products. Educating consumers on the social- and environmental footprint associated with their buys is a crucial aspect of a sustainable apparel industry. What do our brands do \u2013 to make consumers change their ways?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communicating Sustainable benefits<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost all brands disclose material use and benefits for the environment on their product overview pages. Just think about the energy consumption of all the washing, drying, and ironing. In apparel this can make up to 25% of your product\u2019s total footprint! To change consumer behavior, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patagonia.com\/product-care.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patagonia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/help.vaude.com\/care-repair-apparel\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaude<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> disclose tips on repairs and maintenance of your products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disclosing Product Environmental data<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decathlon discloses the carbon footprint of all its products (see image below). And provides a clear reference to what the footprint numbers represent. Due to increasing legislation like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/product-environmental-footprint\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European PEF method<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, disclosing environmental data becomes crucial. A trend expected to become even bigger in the next two years. Brands deciding to take their numbers out of their sustainability report and under their products \u2013 go bigger and bolder. These are all great developments. However, with only Decathlon disclosing product footprints, there\u2019s room for improvement in terms of environmental data disclosure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How is your brand improving?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understand the true environmental costs of your outerwear products. Calculate their environmental footprint and improve where it matters most \u2013 completely driven by data. Sounds good?
