Importance of sustainability in hospitality

The demand for sustainable products and services is growing. Sustainability was initially predominantly focused on the production industry, but tourism has seen an increasing demand over the past years as well. In 2017, already 87% of travelers indicated sustainability is important to them and almost 40% actively made use of more sustainable travel and lodging options.
Travelers are also increasingly critical about what sustainability actually means and research indicates that transparency is key to establish trust. Finally, sustainability also implies operational efficiency and thus cost efficiency.

The challenge for the industry is to measure and manage their environmental impact in a quantitative manner. Environmental business intelligence helps hospitality businesses to grasp the opportunities of sustainable growth

The environmental hotspots per business model vary widely.

During a pilot in 2017, we assessed the environmental impact of 10 hotels in Amsterdam. The results showed two things. First,  that in comparison to production industries, it is relatively easy to calculate the environmental performance of hospitality businesses. It can be performed in as little as one day, and provide hoteliers with accurate and valuable insight to decrease their environmental impact. It also showed that hotels differ significantly from each other, both in terms of total environmental impact and the origin of these impacts. For some hotels, for example, electricity might be an important factor, while the environmental impact of other hotels might be largely caused by their food consumption or even their furniture.

Environmental Intelligence can pay off quickly for the Hospitality Industry

The efforts to arrive at valuable insights are relatively low and the insights clearly pinpoint opportunities for sustainable growth for the Hospitality industry.

To help the industry move forward with an effective sustainable strategy, we have developed a white paper to share our knowledge and experience. We are grateful for the cooperation of the participating hotels to make this possible.
