The EU is moving ahead with plans to eradicate greenwashing, which is the use of misleading green labeling claims and ads.<\/p>\n<h3>The plan<\/h3>\n<p>The EU Parliament and Council have reached a provisional agreement on new rules to ban &#8222;greenwashing&#8220;, a practice that conveys false, misleading or unsubstantiated claims about a product\u2019s environmental benefits. The aim of the new rule is to protect consumers from misleading claims, and to help them make better and more informed buying decisions.<\/p>\n<p>To make &#8222;green&#8220; claims, companies will need to provide \u201cproof of recognised excellent environmental performance relevant to the claim\u201d, which is why accurate and reliable measurement data will be so crucial to prove this.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6758\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6758\" style=\"width: 850px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6758 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2023-09-29-at-10.43.32.png\" alt=\"EU to ban greenwashing claims\" width=\"850\" height=\"556\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6758\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: Unsplash<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>What will be banned?<\/h3>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20230918IPR05412\/eu-to-ban-greenwashing-and-improve-consumer-information-on-product-durability\">European Parliament News<\/a>, the following won&#8217;t be allowed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Generic environmental claims, e.g. \u201cenvironmentally friendly\u201d, \u201cnatural\u201d, \u201cbiodegradable\u201d, \u201cclimate neutral\u201d or \u201ceco\u201d, without proof of recognised excellent environmental performance relevant to the claim<\/li>\n<li>Commercial communications about a product with a feature that limits its durability if information is available on the feature and its effects on the durability<\/li>\n<li>Claims based on emissions offsetting schemes that a product has neutral, reduced or positive impact on the environment<\/li>\n<li>Sustainability labels not based on approved certification schemes or established by public authorities<\/li>\n<li>Durability claims in terms of usage time or intensity under normal conditions, if not proven;<br \/>\nprompting the consumer to replace consumables, such as printer ink cartridges, earlier than strictly necessary<\/li>\n<li>Presenting software updates as necessary even if they only enhance functionality features<\/li>\n<li>Presenting goods as repairable when they are not.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Who will be affected?<\/h3>\n<p>All industries that make products will be affected, from food and beverage to fashion, technology and travel.<\/p>\n<h3>When will it come into effect?<\/h3>\n<p>The Parliament and the Council will vote on bringing the proposals into law in November 2023 and EU member states will be given 24 months to enforce them.
