This article teaches Product Designers about:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ecodesign and Circular Design Approaches<\/li>\n<li>Sustainable design choices for each product life-cycle stage<\/li>\n<li>How measuring environmental impacts supercharges design choices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Sustainable Design Approaches<\/h2>\n<p>Sustainable Design encompasses two main complementary branches: Ecodesign and Circular Design*.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/guide-to-sustainable-product-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ecodesign<\/a> minimizes a product\u2019s environmental footprint. With the help of Life Cycle Assessment (<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/life-cycle-assessment-lca-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LCA<\/a>), it <strong>considers all life cycle stages to find and employ the most effective impact reduction measures.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/guide-to-sustainable-product-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Circular Design<\/a> aims to <strong>keep materials within the economic loop<\/strong> by repurposing or recycling them. Products can also be <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/c2ccertified.org\/the-standard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">certified as circular<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Good news: <strong>In the EU, Sustainable Design will gain increasing support from the \u201cNew Circular Economy Plan\u201d<\/strong> &#8211; comprising the <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/espr-2023-overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation<\/a> and <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/right-to-repair-updates-product-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Right to Repair<\/a> initiatives. The legislation is still under development, but the sustainable changes you make today set you (and our planet) up for success. So let\u2019s dive into it!<\/p>\n<p><em>*Social responsibility considerations, such as sourcing from suppliers with fair wages and labor practices are great. However, they aren\u2019t strictly necessary for Ecodesign or Circular Design, and cannot be measured with LCA.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Sustainable Design Ideas by Life Cycle Stage<\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at sustainable design measures you can take in each <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/cradle-to-grave-in-lca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">life-cycle stage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5024\" src=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/product_life_cycle_concise_800-400pn.png\" alt=\"Product Life Cycle Stages Cradle to Grave\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Choosing Raw Materials<\/h3>\n<p>Raw materials always come with environmental impacts. Reused materials often have lower environmental impacts by sparing virgin-material-production impacts**. Here, the research task is up to you and your suppliers. LCA cannot innovate your processes for you, only measure your success.<\/p>\n<h3>Transportation<\/h3>\n<p>By designing products for <strong>efficient (bulk) shipping<\/strong>, and choosing <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/customers\/zeropackaging-reduced-the-carbon-footprint-of-vodafones-packaging\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">low-impact packaging<\/a>, greenhouse gas emissions from transport can be reduced.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Think of stackable products, or juices that are transported as concentrates and mixed with water afterward.<\/li>\n<li>Tying back to the previous life-cycle stages: choose materials and processes available in the same region, maybe even close to your customers.\u00a0 This <strong>reduces transport distances<\/strong> and thereby greenhouse gas emissions from fuel use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As always, it is crucial to <strong>measure the impact of your changes<\/strong>\u00a0 &#8211; depending on the product in question, transport might, or might not, be a big part of its environmental footprint.<\/p>\n<h3>Product Use Phase<\/h3>\n<p>Design enables <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/energy-climate-change-environment\/standards-tools-and-labels\/products-labelling-rules-and-requirements\/energy-label-and-ecodesign\/about_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">energy efficiency<\/a> and long product lives. In general, <strong>longer product lives lead to lower \u201cimpact per product lifetime\u201d<\/strong> and decrease overall consumption of replacement products.<\/p>\n<p>Design measures that prolong product lifetimes include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Choosing robust materials that age gracefully<\/li>\n<li>Design things people love, so they maintain them well and keep them longer. Thoroughly test and optimize your designs for practicality, longevity, and beauty.<\/li>\n<li>Enabling product repair* through modular product design: out-of-date or broken components can be replaced individually. A business example here is the modular phone from <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fairphone.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fairphone<\/a>. <em>*Repair requires support from your corporate strategy &#8211; read more below!<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Enable second lives: for example, this single-use salt-grinder could have easily been a multiple-use object, if the hole had been a bit bigger to enable refill.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5026\" src=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/saltgrinder-blurred.png\" alt=\"Saltgrinder example\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, design can nudge consumers to use products more responsibly*. Let\u2019s look at some examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>People often overdose washing-powders or -liquids, which has adverse environmental effects. Some producers prevent this by selling washing detergent in <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yumpu.com\/en\/document\/view\/15444293\/unit-dose-a-sustainability-step-for-fabrics-liquids-unilever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">capsule or tablet form<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>By not including a standby button on electronic devices, people are \u201cforced\u201d to save much electricity (and money).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>*The line between nudging and patronizing can be thin. The more valuable materials can be recovered while others might go into waste processing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To enable efficient disassembly and material separation, incorporating features such as <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/ellenmacarthurfoundation.org\/circular-examples\/dissolvable-stitches-that-improve-clothing-recycling-resortecs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dissolvable threads<\/a> in textiles or replacing glue with clips can be effective.<\/p>\n<p>When assuming product recycling in LCA: is there recycling infrastructure available in the markets you operate in? Or do you need to take ownership of your products beyond <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/end-of-life-eol-in-lca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">end-of-life<\/a>, for recycling to realistically take place? <em>Read more about take-back schemes below!<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Designers are no Iiland<\/h2>\n<p>Some design features need to be \u201cactivated\u201d by other departments in your company. Especially repair, component reuse, refurbishment, and recycling require strong support by corporate strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Companies can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>retain <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/productstewardship.net\/about\/what-product-stewardship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">product stewardship<\/a>\u00a0through <strong>take-back or leasing schemes<\/strong>. This ensures that products are reused, refurbished, or recycled at the end of their life.<\/li>\n<li>provide <strong>extended repair guarantees<\/strong>, affordable and convenient repair services, or DIY <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patagonia.com\/repairs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">repair tutorials<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>make spare parts and repair information available.
