But for this decade, the focus is clear: Adhere to the 1,5\u00b0C Paris climate goals.<\/p>\n<p>BMW already has a deep insight into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwgroup.com\/en\/investor-relations\/facts-and-figures.html\">environmental impact of their products<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One produced vehicle accounts for 0,23 tons of CO\u2082 \u2013 the equivalent of <strong>12% of the CO\u2082 budget of one person<\/strong>. Per kilometer, BMW cites emissions of 99g of CO\u2082 \u2013 down from 127g CO\u2082 \/ km just three years prior (2017).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But BMW wants to go one step further. At their Annual General Meeting, chairman Oliver Zipse announced the plan to avoid 200 million tons of CO\u2082 by 2030 \u2013 and comply to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/how-to-get-going-science-based-targets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Science-based Targets Initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, we will dive into BMW\u2019s science-based targets, and what measures they want to take to reach these goals.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13987\" src=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Screenshot-2021-05-19-at-15.47.25-1024x661-1.png\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" srcset=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"661\" \/><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Science-based targets: How BMW wants to comply with the 1,5\u00b0C Paris climate goals<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BMW has analyzed both direct and indirect emissions, also known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/scope-1-2-and-3-emissions-overview-to-direct-and-indirect-emissions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This means that they have assessed both the emissions at their own production locations and up and downstream of their value chain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These goals have been validated by the Science-based Targets initiative to ensure that they are measurable and verifiable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the core goals was a fully net-neutral production by 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in order to reduce emissions to a relevant level group-wide, BMW had to look deeper.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14025\" src=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/BMWs-climate-goals-aligned-with-Science-based-targets-1-1024x1024-1.png\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" srcset=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>How BMW turned their production locations carbon neutral<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To turn their production locations carbon-neutral, BMW has been purchasing 100% green power since the end of 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also offset their scope 1 and 2 emissions \u2013 for all locations worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saving 200 million tonnes of CO\u2082 by 2030<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the Annual General Meeting, the company announced that it will avoid emissions of over 200 million tonnes of CO\u2082 by 2030. This is equivalent to more than 20 times the annual CO\u2082 emissions of a city with over a million inhabitants, like Munich.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Looking at the entire life cycle of a car<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Science-based targets are based on the entire life cycle of a product or service \u2013 from raw material extraction to end-of-life recycling. That means that BMW had to not only measure the entire value chain and life cycle of their production \u2013 they were the very foundation of their reduction plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><em>\u201cA climate-friendly car is not created solely by using green power. We must design our vehicles for sustainability from the very first day of development: reducing the amount of material used to manufacture them and, above all, planning for reuse and recycling from the very beginning.\u201d Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>BMW\u2019s 5-step plan to help achieve Paris climate goals<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oliver Zipse announced 5 key principles that will guide their actions this decade:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effective climate protection is only possible through intensive use of technology<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Industrialization needs the right timing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The future of our planet requires circularity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digitalization helps humanity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growth is the most relevant currency for the economy<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s dive deeper into points 1 and 3 \u2013 because these are the ones that enable BMW\u2019s climate strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13990\" src=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Screenshot-2021-05-19-at-15.49.56-1024x658-1.png\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" srcset=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"658\" \/><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Leveraging circular economy principles<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RE:THINK, RE:DUCE, RE:USE, RE:CYCLE, BMW has adopted circular <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/circular-economy-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">economy principles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the motto for this year\u2019s international automotive exhibition, IAA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Namely, they will focus their new \u201cNeue Klasse\u201d generation of cars to reduce resource consumption per vehicle by increasing the percentage of secondary materials such as recycled steel, plastics, and aluminum.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>50% electric by 2030<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BMW aims for at least 50 percent of global sales to be fully electric by 2030.\u00a0 They see the ramp-up of electromobility as the most important factor in reducing emissions during the use phase of a vehicle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between now and 2025, the BMW Group will increase its sales of fully-electric models by an average of well over 50 percent per year \u2013 more than ten times the number of units sold in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This also means that there will no longer be any segment in the entire product portfolio with not at least one fully electric alternative.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In total, over the next ten years or so, the BMW Group will release about ten million fully electric vehicles onto the roads.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Reducing Carbon footprint of high-voltage battery by 50%+<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High-voltage batteries are a key component of ramping up electric vehicles. But the process of manufacturing the battery and producing battery cells is extremely energy-intensive and therefore an important factor in the carbon footprint of any electric car.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BMW aims to reduce the carbon footprint of the high-voltage battery in their next generation to less than half the baseline value for the current technology. The new battery and cell concept, which includes cell chemistry, is supposed to make a significant contribution. At the same time, BMW aims to reduce the amount of cobalt in the cathode, as well as not require rare earths for their electric motors.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14000\" src=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/rsz_2p90416689_highres_the-all-new-bmw-m3-c-1024x683-1.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" srcset=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Circular design and mono materials<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recycling needs to be considered in the design of the vehicle \u2013 complex materials are harder to recycle. A good example of this is the electrical systems, whose copper wiring needs to be removed in order to recycle steel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using mono-materials greatly increases the ability to recycle parts of the vehicle. This is why a part of BMW\u2019s strategy is to focus efforts on circular design principles.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Offsetting unavoidable emissions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs far as the BMW Group is concerned: Avoiding comes before offsetting.\u201d Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the efforts, there are certain emissions that are unavoidable.
