Companies are therefore eager to \u201cput on a green shirt\u201d and market vague sustainability claims- but only some of them are <\/span><b>actually<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> changing their behavior.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only way for customers to check which companies are better for the environment is by looking behind the green facade: i.e. asking for environmental data.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most reliable environmental data on products are obtained with a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). And <\/span><b>any commercial environmental (sustainability) claim<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about a product needs such reliable data. Without data \u2013 greenwashing allegations are just around the corner. How to ensure credible environmental data with LCA<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is a Life cycle assessment (LCA)?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Life Cycle Assessment <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/beginners-guide-lca-apparel\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(LCA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is THE scientific method to measure all potential environmental and human health impacts of a product. The results: 15+ environmental impact outcomes (carbon footprint, water use, land use, etc).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An LCA of your product shows exactly where different types of impacts are coming from. It provides you with all <\/span><b>data you need to back up sustainability claims<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and\u2026insights to improve your environmental performance! You can make an LCA of your products using LCA software, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/mobius\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like Ecochain LCA.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The principles of LCA are<\/span><b> defined in the ISO standards <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14040 &amp; 14044. The systematic data collection and analysis prescribed in these ISOs is what makes an LCA so accurate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>To make your LCA results even more credible, follow these steps:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a. Use primary data<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">b. Verify your LCA<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">c. Follow the correct LCA norms &amp; standards<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s dive into each of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a. Use primary data for high-quality LCAs\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The quality of your LCA results truly depends on the quality of the data that goes in. The more data you collect directly from your supply chain, the better. This raw manufacturing and supply chain is called primary data.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>What if I don\u2019t have all my primary data?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often companies don\u2019t have access yet to all their primary data. If you don\u2019t, there are pre-researched impact databases you can use to fill gaps in your primary data. This type of data is based on averages and is called<\/span><b> \u2018secondary data\u2019.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 Secondary data helps a lot of companies start up their environmental measurements. The more primary data they gather afterward, the more precise they make their LCA results. It\u2019s often a work in progress.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/primary-vs-secondary-data-in-lca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read more about the difference between primary vs secondary data in LCA.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>TIP:<\/b> <b>Always<\/b><b> be honest about your data collection process.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To prevent greenwashing claims \u2013 be very clear &amp; transparent about the sources of data you use in your LCA. And your progress in primary data collection. This creates clarity on how well the environmental data in your claims reflects your exact product.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">b. Verify your LCA results<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An LCA can be verified, which gives extra credibility to its results. Verification checks if the LCA is consistent with the ISO standards, and whether the data, methodology, and interpretations are appropriate with regard to the goals of the study. Verification is done by a company-internal or external LCA expert, who was not involved in the study.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is verifying LCAs mandatory?<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies are often asked for a verified LCA by important stakeholders in form of an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). EPDs are always verified. But verifying an LCA itself often isn\u2019t mandatory (yet). At Ecochain, we <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">always<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommend a check by our Environmental Specialists or verification when you <\/span><b>use the LCA for external communication.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">c. Follow LCA norms &amp; standards<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We <\/span><b>highly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommend making an LCA according to LCA standards and\/or guidelines. If you use LCA software, this step will be a lot easier.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Always make an LCA according to ISO14040 &amp; 14044.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Analyze in which country you will publish your LCA. There are industry, product, and country-specific norms &amp; guidelines on how to do your LCA or publish an EPD. E.g. the EN15804 norm <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/en15804-consequences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the European construction industry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For specific product categories, there are also Product Category Rules (PCRs) you can follow. How to compare\/benchmark environmental scores of products<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comparing products \u2013 e.g. with an average product, and then communicating water or CO2 savings, is a popular sustainability claim. But watch out to make such claims.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Our tips for comparing products:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Model the product you compare to, according to the <\/span><b>exact same methodology, assumptions, and context <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you applied to measure your own product.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Model your company\u2019s \u201caverage product\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from your own portfolio and compare your \u2018sustainable\u2019 product to that.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Use a PCR (if there is one). <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some product categories (E.g. in construction, or textile) there are PCRs, also called Product Category Rules. PCRs are based on the ISO ISO 14040\/44. They provide the rules, guidelines, and requirements, for making an EPD (summary report of an LCA) for a specific product category. Some even have industry averages you can compare to (like the Dutch asphalt sector). You can compare verified EPDs of products if they follow the same PCRs. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.environdec.com\/pcr-library\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2192 OVERVIEW OF ALL EXISTING PCRs.<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Failing these requirements often leads to greenwashing allegations!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will comparing environmental scores be easier in the future?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>Hopefully yes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 due to the introduction of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/product-environmental-footprint\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EU\u2019s PEF method<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The PEF will create LCA methods specific to many different product categories, called <\/span><b>PEFCRs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (PEF\u2019s Product Category Rules).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PEFCRs make products within the same category <\/span><b>comparable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through a common LCA method and delivers an \u2018average product\u2019. You would benchmark your product to this average product \u2013 without having to model the comparable product yourself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The PEF is currently being developed by the EU. It\u2019s still open if the PEF will be made into product labels or even become mandatory. Moreover, verification requirements under the PEF are still unknown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>*PLEASE NOTE:<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> these PEFCRs are not the same as the already existing PCRs based on ISO 14040\/44. PEFCRs basically can be seen as the PEF version of PCRs. Yes \u2013 terms &amp; concepts within corporate sustainability remain confusing sometimes\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a id=\"communicate-sustainability-claims\"><\/a><strong>3. How to communicate your sustainability claim<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now you know what (and what not) to base your claims on. But how do you communicate your data effectively? In short, communicating environmental claims needs to be:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Accessible: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your annual sustainability report\/product LCA report is the basis for any claims you make. Follow good reporting norms (e.g. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalreporting.org\/standards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GRI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and practices to make it accessible to the reader.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Understandable:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Always put yourself into the shoes of your stakeholders. Don\u2019t use jargon. Explain all concepts and try to write in simple language. This is KEY \u2013 whether it\u2019s on a product label or in a sustainability report.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Relevant: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t put all your environmental data into a report or claim- you can reference published supplementary material. Product LCA results exist in 15 impact categories. Not all of them are equally relevant for you or your stakeholders. Analyze the biggest impact hotspots and impact types of your product and choose the most important ones. E.g. land use, water use, water pollution, and carbon footprint for apparel products.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Transparent: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ALWAYS have quantitative and published data to support your claims. Report the sources of your data and the methods you used. And make sure to not miss any possible negative signs ;). Companies often don\u2019t get from A to Z in one night.
