This means the environmental footprint results don\u2019t include the footprint of product use by customers and its end-of-life processes (waste\/recycling\/upcycling).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cradle-to-gate simplifies and speeds up the LCA process. This is handy in certain situations \u2013 as you don\u2019t always have data on what happens after your products go out of the factory doors. For example, chemicals or textiles can be used in multiple applications after they leave the factory doors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article you\u2019ll learn:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What LCA-Life Cycle Models do\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Cradle-to-Gate looks like in LCA<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to choose Cradle-to-Gate in LCA<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cradle-to-Gate is a \u201cLife Cycle Model\u201d in LCA<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You most likely heard about Cradle to Gate in the context of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/life-cycle-assessment-lca-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life Cycle Assessments (LCA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. LCA is the scientific method to measure all potential environmental and human health impacts of a product. Its scope (which phases in the life of your product the LCA actually looks at), is determined with a \u201cLife Cycle Model\u201d. And Cradle-to-Gate is one of several Life Cycle Models.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life Cycle Models determine what your LCA looks at<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An LCA is like a magnifying glass: it makes you zoom in on every detail of your product\u2019s environmental footprint. Here, Life Cycle Models determine which <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">product life cycle phases<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you apply that magnifying glass to.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most products go through the following life cycle phases:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raw Material Extraction, also called the \u201ccradle\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manufacturing &amp; Processing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transportation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usage &amp; Retail<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waste Disposal, also called the \u201cgrave\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LCAs determine the environmental impacts of some, or all of those stages \u2013 according to the Life Cycle Model you choose. More formally, this is called choosing the \u201cscope\u201d of your LCA. Or deciding on the \u201csystem boundaries\u201d of your LCA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Main Takeaway: <\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Life Cycle Model in Life Cycle Assessment, also called its \u201cscope\u201d, determines how many phases of your product\u2019s life cycle (from raw material production until end of life phase) you include in your environmental footprint measurements.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Cradle-to-Gate looks at in LCA<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you do an LCA according to the Cradle-to-gate model, you collect data and gain insight only into the<\/span><b> first two stages<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the product life cycle: your raw materials, transport of the raw materials, and production processes. You stop assessing <\/span><b>before <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the finished product is transported anywhere \u2013 so before it leaves the factory gate!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24431\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 485px;\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24431\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-24431\" src=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Life-Cycle-Models_LCA_Ecochain-300x240-1.png\" sizes=\"(max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" srcset=\"\" alt=\"Life Cycle Models_LCA_Ecochain\" width=\"485\" height=\"388\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24431\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Life Cycle Models_LCA_Ecochain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternative Life Cycle Models\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Cradle-to-Gate doesn\u2019t butter your toast, the following alternatives can be used as your LCA\u2019s scope:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/cradle-to-grave-in-lca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Cradle-to-grave<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> includes all 5 life cycle stages in your measurements. This gives you the complete environmental footprint, from start to end. (Stages 1-5). It\u2019s the most recommended model \u2013 as it gives the most complete footprint results.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/cradle-to-cradle-in-lca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Cradle-to-cradle<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a variation of Cradle-to-grave, but exchanges the waste stage with a recycling\/upcycling process that makes materials or components reusable for another product \u2013 essentially \u201cclosing the loop\u201d. (Stages 1-5, with 5 being another product\u2019s Stage 1)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to choose Cradle-to-Gate in LCA<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies choose cradle-to-gate as LCA model because:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>It\u2019s easier &amp; faster:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s easier to collect data on only the first two phases than the data necessary for LCAs on the full product lifecycle (cradle-to-gate &amp; cradle-to-cradle). Collecting data on how customers use your product and how your product is disposed of\/recycled\/upcycled \u2013 is extra time and effort not all companies want to invest.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*Note: the use phase and end-of-life phase in a product\u2019s lifecycle can account for a big portion of your footprint (e.g. up to 20% in the footprint of apparel products). Always aim to include them \u2013 when you\u2019re ready.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>It\u2019s a good starting point: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As it\u2019s faster \u2013<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many of our customers first start with cradle-to-gate LCAs for their initial product footprint results. It\u2019s a good way to get the hang of LCA and already gives you great insights into the footprint of your production processes and materials. After that, they perform cradle-to-gate or cradle-to-cradle LCAs for a complete picture.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use cases<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using Cradle-to-Gate is often used:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When post-factory-gate processes are <\/span><b>uncertain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 e.g. your product is input for too many different supply chains. In this case, having an LCA or EPD ready for your customers is handy!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To create an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/environmental-product-declaration-epd-overview\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">environmental product declaration (EPD)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Those can easily be\/are often requested based on Cradle to Gate!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To compare products that have identical post-factory-gate processes.
