LCI databases contain information on the average environmental footprint of most materials and processes used in our daily lives and national economies. They provide environmental data companies can\u2019t or haven\u2019t yet measured themselves yet. LCI databases come into play in Phase 2, the inventory analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From inventory analysis to impact assessment<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the inventory analysis, we collect data: How much do we need of which raw material, energy input, or waste stream, to create our product or service? This is how <\/span><b>we map our product system. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can do a recap on data collection in LCA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/input-data-for-lca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, we link the product system\u2019s components to LCI data. <\/span><b>LCI data tells us exactly which emissions, land use or resource depletion a product or process causes.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Our end goal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in the inventory analysis is to obtain a <\/span><b>life cycle inventory:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> telling us which emissions, land use, or resource depletion <\/span><b>our product system as a whole<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cause. LCA, LCI, LCIA \u2013 What\u2019s the difference?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to get LCI data<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, if we need LCI data for our life cycle inventory, how do we get it?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can measure LCI data ourselves \u2013 this gives us <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/primary-vs-secondary-data-in-lca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">primary data, which makes our LCA the most accurate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But this is resource intensive!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternatively, we can use existing <\/span><b><i>\u201c<\/i><\/b><b>secondary\u201d LCI data<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is used in almost every LCA somewhere*!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secondary LCI data on an individual process is contained in a <\/span><b>dataset. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Datasets come from scientific research or industry research. But to obtain datasets, we don\u2019t call our buddy at the local university- we search for them in LCI databases!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>LCI databases are collections of LCI\u2013datasets. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These collections can contain anything from a handful to several thousands of datasets. But when LCA became a crucial tool for environmental innovation, national governments jumped on the bandwagon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many databases are specific to a national context and created through collaborations between governments, research groups, and national universities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some examples of LCI databases:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NMD on the Dutch construction industry (see below)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ELCD on Europe (see below)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrel.gov\/lci\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USLCI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the USA<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/simapro.com\/products\/idea-japanese-inventory-database\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IDEA v.2 <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on Japan\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.auslci.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AusLCI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Australia\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cpmdatabase.cpm.chalmers.se\/AboutDatabase.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SPINE@CPM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Sweden<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lca-net.com\/projects\/show\/lifecycle-assessment-basic-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LCA-Food <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on Danish food<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ghgprotocol.org\/Third-Party-Databases\/Korea-Life-Cycle-Inventory-Database\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Korea LCI database<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Industries, having their hand on the faucet of raw data \u2013 did not fall short in providing &amp; selling their insights. A selection of sector-specific LCI databases \u2013 Ecochain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another player to behold: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eplca.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/LCDN\/index.xhtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>The European Platform on Life Cycle Assessment<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a host\/ infrastructure for LCI databases. It has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eplca.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/globalLCA.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">global <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scope and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eplca.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/LCDN\/index.xhtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">platform <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for ILCD or PEF-compliant databases. It also hosts individual datasets from small providers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line is: anyone with reliable LCI data can create or contribute to a database.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a id=\"most-used-databases\"><\/a>The most-used LCI Databases<\/span><\/h2>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Ecoinvent<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecoinvent is widely considered the largest, most consistent, and most transparent database on the market. It contains over 18.000 unique datasets, covering a wide array of products, services, and processes. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can pair it with almost every LCA method \u2013 such as the EF 3.0 method. Among others, Ecoinvent is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecoinvent.org\/the-ecoinvent-association\/software-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">implemented<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Ecochain LCA software, Simapro, GaBi, and open LCA.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. GaBi<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The GaBi\u2013database contains about 15.000 datasets. Gabi <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sphera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/MODELING-PRINCIPLES-GaBi-Databases-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">describes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> itself as \u201cindustry-born\u201d based on extensive stakeholder involvement and feedback from industry and third-party sources\u201d. GaBi is LCA software as well as an LCI database, both owned by Sphera. Sphera and Ecoinvent both provide some datasets to the new PEF database (see below).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GaBi datasets are integrated into GaBi software and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.openlca.org\/gabi-v2022-2-databases-now-available-for-openlca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OpenLCA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. In Europe: PEF<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/product-environmental-footprint\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Product Environmental Footprint<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (PEF) is an LCA-standard and accompanying database initiated by the European Commission. The PEF aims to develop a harmonized EU-wide framework that ensure comparability between LCA results.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By using the PEF standard, method &amp; database, LCA results from different studies become comparable. PEF datasets<\/span><b>\u00a0are available for specific <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/environment\/eussd\/smgp\/PEFCR_OEFSR_en.htm\"><b>product categories<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, adhering to the product category\u2019s rules (PEFCR).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you perform a PEF or OEF(Organizational Environmental Footprint) LCA, you get free access to some of the datasets that provide PEF\/OEF-compliant data. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eplca.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/LCDN\/contactListEF.xhtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can find the overview of these datasets here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The access is managed through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eplca.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/LCDN\/contactListEF.xhtml\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cnodes\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the European Platform on Life Cycle Assessment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PEF datasets are compatible with the PEF method only. They are implemented in several LCA software, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/mobius\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecochain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The PEF\u2019s predecessor database \u2013 the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eplca.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/ELCD3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ELCD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (v. 3.2 ) was discontinued in 2018, but is still available in Ecochain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. In the Netherlands: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nationale Milieudatabase (NMD) on construction work<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The NMD covers a wide range of building materials and construction-related services in the Dutch context. Its datasets <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/milieudatabase.nl\/en\/environmental-performance\/assessment-method\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adhere<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/en15804-consequences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EN 15804+A2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the LCA standard on construction products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The NMD is suitable only for studies following EN 15804 + A2. NMD v3.3 &amp; 3.5, is currently available in Ecochain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a id=\"choosing\"><\/a>When do you choose which database?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You choose your LCA database based on the LCA target region (e.g. in the EU or US), LCA standard, and possible PCR (product category rule) you\u2019ve chosen for your LCA study. For example, if you choose the PEF as your LCA standard, you will use the PEF method and PEF database. If you choose the EN15804+A2 as standard, you will use Ecoinvent and the EN15804+A2 database. Databases need to be chosen wisely, in accordance with your studies\u2019 goal and scope.
