And the most essential ingredient (and output) is \u201cdata\u201d! Data has different shapes along the LCA-process:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>In LCA phase 2<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (image below), the inventory analysis, we map and gather the total emissions (to air, soil, water), resource extractions, and land use\/transformations that our product causes. This is called our \u201clife-cycle inventory\u201d (LCI).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>In LCA phase 3<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (image below), the Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA), environmental impacts are calculated from the LCI, using \u201ccharacterization factors\u201d. The four phases of making a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phase 2 in LCA: Inventory Analysis \u2013 From Product Data to LCI<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In phase 2 of making an LCA, we create the foundation we need to make a Life Cycle Assessment of our product! It essentially covers the <\/span><b>data collection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for your LCA and modeling your product system\/creating a flow model of all your input- and output processes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. \u201cMap out\u201d which materials and processes are part of your <\/span><b>product system. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creating a flowchart or flow model (example below) of your product system can help tremendously. Your product system shows all material, energy, transport, and waste flows connected to your product\u2019s life cycle \u2013 that you incorporate in your LCA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-888\" src=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/LCI-300x240-1.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 726px) 100vw, 726px\" srcset=\"\" alt=\"Life Cycle Inventory Flow Model\" width=\"726\" height=\"581\" \/><\/p>\n<p>2. <a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/input-data-for-lca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collect data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on materials, transport, energy use, waste streams, and process emissions that are part of your product system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Find which \u201cenvironmental interventions\u201d \u2013 are caused by all materials and processes in your product system. Environmental interventions are the emissions of substances (e.g. GHG emissions) and extractions of resources caused by your product system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You find this information through impact references from impact datasets on the emissions (to air, soil, water), resource extractions, and land use\/ transformations each part causes. Such datasets can be:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/environmental-product-declaration-epd-overview\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EPD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from a supplier on a product you purchase (a summarized, verified LCA report)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An appropriate impact dataset reference from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/lci-databases-in-lca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">life cycle databases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (called secondary data). Every LCA tool has many databases you can use.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Measuring <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/primary-vs-secondary-data-in-lca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">primary data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (when you collect highly accurate raw emissions from your production locations, etc.).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sum of all environmental interventions from your product system forms your LCI! <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phase 3: Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This phase creates the main LCA results on your product: your product environmental impact data, split into the several unique <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/impact-categories-lca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LCA Impact Categories<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It creates the impact data used for making <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claims<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/guide-to-sustainable-product-design\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sustainable product design<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or reporting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To understand how LCIA works in detail, let\u2019s have a closer look at its key concepts: <\/span><b>(1) Impact Categories,\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>(2) Characterization factors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>(3)<\/b> <b>LCIA methods<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Impact Categories<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To understand LCIA, we first dive into what we\u2019re transforming our input data into!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/impact-categories-lca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impact Categories<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are the result of an LCA. There are approximately 15+ impact categories in LCA, that give you a clear overview of all the core impacts your product has on the environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What are impact categories exactly?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human activities result in many different chemical compounds that are emitted to \u2013 and affect the environment. The effects of chemical compounds with similar environmental impacts are added up. This gives us the total impact on a specific \u201cenvironmental impact category\u201d. Think of the categories: \u201cclimate change\u201d, \u201cterrestrial acidification\u201d, \u201cphotochemical ozone formation\u201d, and \u201chuman toxicity\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each impact category has its \u201ccommon unit\u201d: e.g. kg CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-eq for climate change, kg SO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-eq for terrestrial acidification, and kg NOx-eq for ozone formation*. Next to chemical compounds, some impact categories concern resource extraction and land use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Examples from ReCiP\u00e9 2016.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summarizing environmental impact categories<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental impact categories (\u201cmidpoint indicators\u201d) are sometimes grouped into more generic categories (\u201cendpoint indicators\u201d) if they affect these categories. Examples of endpoint indicators are \u201cdamage to human health\u201d measured in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/data\/gho\/indicator-metadata-registry\/imr-details\/158#:~:text=Definition%3A-,One%20DALY%20represents%20the%20loss%20of%20the%20equivalent%20of%20one,health%20condition%20in%20a%20population.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disability-adjusted life years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or \u201cdamage to ecosystem quality\u201d. An important single score\/endpoint indicator is the Dutch <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/environmental-cost-indicator-eci\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental Cost Indicator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Characterization factors<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Characterization factors \u201ctranslate\u201d environmental interventions (your emissions and resource extractions!) into results for environmental impact categories. These characterization rules are set by LCIA methods which we discuss in point 3.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How characterization factors work:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We multiply an emission (to air, soil, or water), a resource extraction, or a land use\/transformation (from the LCI) with the characterization factors of the environmental impact categories it has an impact on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different chemicals can have impacts in the same impact category. These are converted into the categories\u2019 units (such as kg CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-eq uniting all greenhouse gasses for climate change). But, chemicals can also have impacts in several impact categories.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impact Category Example: Climate Change\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s use the impact category \u201cclimate change\u201d as an example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your LCI data shows a total 2.7 kg of CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and 0.6 kg of CH<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emitted for our product.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghgprotocol.org\/sites\/default\/files\/ghgp\/Global-Warming-Potential-Values%20%28Feb%2016%202016%29_1.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Characterization factors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 1 kg CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-eq\/ kg CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and 28\u00a0 kg CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-eq\/ kg CH<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiplying LCI data with characterization factors gives us the impact in the category climate change:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.7 kg of CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> *\u00a0 1 kg CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-eq\/ kg CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> = 2.7 kg CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-eq<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">0.6 kg of CH<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> * 28\u00a0 kg CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-eq\/ kg CH<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> = 16.8 kg CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-eq<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-&gt; Climate impacts: 2.7 + 16.8= 19.5 kg CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-eq<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. LCIA methods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different organizations have developed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/helpcenter.ecochain.com\/lcia-methods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LCIA methods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based on different research and geographical contexts. They differ e.g. in their characterization factors and impact categories. Common LCIA methods are the environmental footprint (EF) method, ReCiP\u00e9, and CML 2001.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LCA standards (such as the EN15804 +A2 and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/product-environmental-footprint\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PEF<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) require using a specific LCIA method.
