This is exactly the case when it comes to tennis balls. Annually, 5,5 million Dutch tennis balls end up in incinerators. Imagine the positive effect if those 5,5 million tennis balls would be properly recycled.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meet the responsible tennis ball<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.renewaball.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Renewaball<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the first tennis ball that\u2019s made from recycled tennis balls. Therefore, it can be seen as quite a milestone regarding circular innovation within the sports industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Renewaball collects these old tennis balls with collection bins at several tennis courts. The placing of these collection bins and the use of the Renewaballs is an initiative encouraged by- and initiated in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abnamrowtt.nl\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Tennis Tournament Rotterdam Ahoy (2021) and their head-sponsor ABN AMRO.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11382\" src=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Screenshot-2021-02-12-at-12.52.03.png\" sizes=\"(max-width: 591px) 100vw, 591px\" srcset=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"591\" height=\"563\" \/><figcaption>Image 1. Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.renewaball.com\/our_mission.html\">Renewaball.<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><b><i>How it works<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Renewaball uses an innovative process that takes apart used tennis balls into clean, separate parts of felt and rubber which are used for the production of the Renewaball.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where a traditional tennis ball does not contain any recycled material, the Renewaball is made out of &gt;30% recycled material.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the best part: not only their own Renewaballs are recycled, but also traditional tennis balls are being collected and re-used. Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.renewaball.com\/our_mission.html\">Renewaball.<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The environmental impact of Renewaball<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Renewaball already knew that sustainability was at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.renewaball.com\/our_mission.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of their products- but wanted the actual data to prove it. They wanted to measure and compare the Renewaball\u2019s environmental impact compared to that of a regular tennis ball. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methodology\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A comparative <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/blog\/life-cycle-assessment-lca-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life Cycle Assessment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (LCA) was performed for the Renewaball and the \u2018business as usual\u2019 alternative in <a href=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/helix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ecochain\u2019s product LCA solution (also known as Mobius)<\/a>. Primary data was used for the production impacts and EcoInvent served as the primary secondary data. The results showed Renewaball\u2019s main impact reduction points compared to a regular, 0% recycled tennis ball.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Results<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The LCA showed that the environmental footprint of a Renewaball was significantly lower than that of a regular tennis ball. <\/span><b>To be specific- 29% lower.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a footprint of <\/span><b>0,41 kg *<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><strong>CO\u2082-eq<\/strong><\/span>, the Renewaball <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has an impact reduction of <\/span><b>0,17 kg <span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><strong>CO\u2082-eq<\/strong><\/span> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compared to that of a <\/span><b>regular tennis ball with 0,58 kg CO\u2082-eq <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Image 2).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\">*CO\u2082-eq = carbon footprint<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11374\" src=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Screenshot-2021-02-11-at-18.19.23-1024x538-1.png\" sizes=\"(max-width: 820px) 100vw, 820px\" srcset=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"820\" height=\"430\" \/><figcaption>Image 3. The environmental impact of a Renewaball vs. a regular tennis ball.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest changemaker: A take back system<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest impact reduction point when comparing the Renewaball with a regular tennis ball is the recycling process of the used Renewaballs that are collected through a take back system (End of life phase).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We already know that recycling is very important. But when it comes to Renewaball it entails a significant impact reduction of at least <\/span><b>0,134 kg CO\u2082-eq per Renewaball<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (image 4) compared to the incineration process of a regular tennis ball. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11377\" src=\"https:\/\/ecochain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Screenshot-2021-02-11-at-18.05.12-1024x455-1.png\" sizes=\"(max-width: 773px) 100vw, 773px\" srcset=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"773\" height=\"343\" \/><figcaption>Image 4. Environmental impact per Life Cycle Phase of the Renewaball vs. a regular tennis ball.\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transportation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where a traditional tennis ball uses wool from New Zealand that is transported to England. The Renewaball uses wool from Norway and the United Kingdom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of this decision- the distance for retrieving materials for a regular tennis ball is on average 6 times more than the distance for materials used for the production of the Renewaball.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, although this is a large difference in transportation distance, this doesn\u2019t have a large significant effect on the Renewaball\u2019s overall impact reduction (&gt;1%), as can be seen in image 3 and 4.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raw materials<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest environmental impact hotspot for the Renewaball is its raw materials which account for nearly 70% of their total environmental impact (image 3).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that\u2019s because the main ingredient for the Renewaball is wool (86%). The reason for this high impact is that just like other livestock, sheep cause a high Greenhouse Gas (GHG) impact, mainly related to methane emissions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Renewaball is making a conscious tradeoff to reduce microplastics related to Nylon -which is not present in the Renewaball- and the increased GHG emissions due to the higher wool content. In the future, Renewaball wants to use recycled wool to further reduce the GHG impact related to wool.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The future is bright<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that Renewaball understands its environmental footprint, we can safely say that the Renewaball is good news and holds a bright future. It initiates sustainable change and impact in the sports industry by offering tennis players an alternative, more sustainable option to play with.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember when we said, \u201cImagine the positive effect if those 5,5 million tennis balls would be properly recycled?\u201d.
